How to Create a Watercolor Scrapbook Page

Hello everyone!!  Kymona here to show you how to create a watercolor scrapbook page using the supplies you have on hand.

Lets get started!!

The theme this month is Fiesta for Mexican Independence Day and Dia De Los Muertos next month!! I had to do some research for both of these days!! I love learning new things.

One thing that was constant in my reading was the use of color. Color plays such a big part in the Mexican culture and I love it.  So I decided to create my own watercolor scrapbook page with the colors that I see in all of my research.

Take a look at the color scheme that I used as a starting point for my scrapbook page.

Here is how this page was created:

Take each color one by one and color them onto the watercolor paper leaving space for blending in between.

Then take a water brush/paint brush and blend the colors moving from top to bottom.

Then cut the dried watercolor paper into smaller 2.75 by 3.50 and place each one in a pocket so that you can see how the layout will look.

Then decide where you want your pictures and embellishments to go.

One pocket has some doodling and fringes.

One pocket has a handwritten journaling on it. Others have sequin.

Another pocket has stickers.

Clean and Simple Scrapbooking with Journal Cards #34

Hello everyone!!  It's me, Kymona and I'm super excited to be here.  I'm here to show you how to create a clean and simple scrapbooking page with journaling cards.

Would you believe if I told you scrapbooking was my first love before card making?  Well it was!!  I use to create scrapbooks for my son, when he was born.  That was 18 years ago and boy have things changed.  Scrapbook pages are so elaborate these days I wasn't sure where to begin.  Now don't laugh at me but its true.  Do you start with the paper, the embellishment, the colors or photos?

When Jennifer asked me about scrapbooking I told her my story and my dilemma.  She kindly let me know that she had a solution for me!! Yayyyy!!  The Layout A Week team!!  The goal is to inspire scrapbookers, new and old (thats me), on how to create easy to make layouts with no waste!!

Lets get started!!

When I sat down to think about what I wanted to create, I knew I wanted a modern look with a  clean and simple feel, since that's my style.

So I went with a pocket page!  I see so many of them these days, I wanted to give it a try.

Take a look at what I created:

Here is how I created this page:

1. Scrolled through all of your pictures on your computer in search of the perfect pictures. That will help you decide how many pockets you will need to create for this page.  Print the pictures, size them, add stickers, then place them in their pockets.

2. Then decide on the pattern papers/journal cards you wanted to use that matched what was happening in the photos. Once you pick them all out, add them to their pockets.

3. After that, pick out some embellishments that matched the colors on the pattern paper. Add them to the pocket of your choice.

4. Decorate the pocket that has the embellishment with a sticker.

5. Type or write your message, add a sticker then add it to its pocket.

6. Seal all of the pockets so that nothing falls out to the pockets.

Nice, easy and definitely clean and simple.

WEEK 24 - FOR THE LOVE OF THE BEACH

Hi everyone!  Here is my layout for the month of June.  I live on an island (albeit a very large one) and the part that I LOVE the most about that is having such easy access to the beach and the ocean at anytime I want.  I find visiting the ocean to be the most relaxing and stress-relieving thing in the world and whenever life gets to me... that is where I go.

This photo is from earlier in the spring but the message is how we all love the beach and that the weather has now improved so we can go again.  Don't get me wrong... we go year round here (and are grateful for that) but being able to go and be warm and not worry about layers is awesome. As is walking in the surf or day-dreaming on a log.

Here is my layout:

I wanted to keep this layout fairly simple although I will confess I had planned to use a heart stencil and modeling paste to add a few hearts or some texture behind my layers.  Oh well! I did however want to tone down my background paper so I applied a fairly liberal coat of gesso to it (thus the curly edges, sorry!).  I used a scraper to put it on and as it dries pretty quick I layered it on as I went just working from top corner to bottom corner and once I went back up to the top it was dry enough to add a bit more. I think I added it about 3 times to get to this level of opacity.

I also, as you can see in the video, used my very old Heidi Swapp distress tool on the edges of the top and bottom strips. I just didn't want them to be too flat.

WEEK 20 - OUR STORY: ME AND MY MOM

Hello again everyone and thanks for joining me for my reveal of my Layout-A-Week layout for May.  This month we were asked to look at the theme of Mom's as it is Mother's Day this month.  I decided to go WAY back to how I made MY mom a mom.

For this layout I decided to step out of my comfort zone of colours and use more vintage-y themed products and also use some more feminine touches of ribbon and flowers.  I am really quite pleased with how it turned out and think it really compliments the photo well.

WEEK 13: VINTAGE AND GREEN

Hello!  Sarah here with your first layout for the month of April.  For April, we decided to do a green layout inspired by Earth Day, or to use an Easter color pallet on our layouts.  I have decided to go GREEN in celebration of Earth Day coming up this month.  We are challenging you to use the color green on your layout or to use something recycled or upcycled on your layouts!  I chose to use the color green and I gave my layout some earthtone colors.  Please check out the video for my process!

Together with Sewing

Hi everyone!  Nancy here today to share with you a fun technique that will add lots of texture to your scrapbook pages, sewing.

Supplies Used:
Cardstock, Kraft and Yellow - Darice
Patterned Papers, Embellishments - Crate Paper Open book
Sequins - Unknown

The process for this project was really quite simple.  After cutting my kraft cardstock to 10" square, I added just a bit of adhesive to the back of my kraft cardstock in the middle to hold it still, then ran the stitches from my machine around the edge twice. Don't add adhesive where you plan to sew or it could gum up your needle.   Don't worry about being perfect with your stitches here, the little bits of wandering just add more interest.

From here I layered my patterned papers and photos.

Added a few embellishments

The last step was adding a few sequins for a bit of whimsy and sparkle.

I really love the interest that the stitches added to my page, and hope you give this technique a try.

Week #38: Lovely Layers

Hi everyone!  Nancy Keslin here today and I am so excited to share with you my layout.  Do you ever wonder how to create lots of interest without a lot of bulk?  How about trying lots of layers.

Supplies Used:

• Patterned Paper - Little Yellow Bicycle, Boardwalk and Rusty Pickle, Swimming Words
• Cardstock - Core'Dinations
• Alphabet - American Crafts Thickers 
• Enamel Dots - My Minds Eye
• Adhesive - Scotch ATG Tape Glider

To begin cut the first patterned paper 9"x9" and adhere in the center of the white cardstock base. 

Next cut a 9 1/2" circle.  No circle cutter or die cut machine?  How about tracing a plate or bowl to form a circle.  A bit old school, but works perfectly every time.  Adhere in the center.

Next, cut a strip of paper 3" x12"  This piece of paper will draw your eye across the page, adding movement to your layout.

The final paper layer is 6"x 10".  This piece will act as a matte for our photos.

 I added three standard 3 1/2"x5" photos from the "class" photographer.  Titled at just a bit of an angle the photos add more interest than if they were lined up side by side.

 At the bottom of the photos I added my title, being sure to overlap each of the papers just a bit so as not to leave the title floating on my page.

 Finally, I added just a few enamel dots in the corners.  These dots create a bit of movement, drawing your eye across the page, while adding a bit of fun and whimsy.

#5 - How to make a stenciled background

I took this challenge a couple weeks ago with the Stencil Girl team:

Use spray mists, inks, paints, modeling paste, embossing powder, pastels, chalk, and whatever messy media you can find! Let's dig into that hoard, pull out some of that "messy stuff," and use it up! There is a mess-maker hiding in all of you! Let her/him out to play!



Since I am trying to get more scrapbooking done, I did a scrapbook page for this challenge. Over the years, I have amassed QUITE the collection of cardstock; and inking, painting, etc is one way to dress up that cardstock to use for a layout. I am sure many of you are in the same boat as me. I am also incredibly tired of putting away patterned paper scraps. BORING! So when I read this challenge from Craft Hoarders Anonymous, I knew it was right up my alley!

#2 - Using Enamel Dots and Stencils on a Scrapbook Page

I've been seeing people making faux enamel dots for their scrapbook pages but they were using glue guns. Well, my glue gun glue is not very pretty so I thought, why not try this with ICE Resin?!

I created clear and colored faux enamel dots with ICE Resin - here's how:
After those cured (it takes a couple days for ICE Resin to cure, about 6 hours before these can be handled), I used them to make a scrapbook page:

(yeah, I spelled "Renegade" wrong...but I fixed it on my page after I took this photo - doh!)

I also used a Stencil Girl stencil to create a fun mixed ink patterned paper background for my page. Here's how:

I hope you try to make your own faux enamel dots using ICE Resin - they cost PENNIES compared to purchased dots and it is a great way to use up any ICE Resin left after making resin paper, jewelry, or other resin projects.
